Good morning, John, it's Thursday already! Jesus. May 3rd.
(party blower tune, from many directions) (blows 5 at once, laughs) (Lets off poppers with confetti) Happy Birthday, Dad.
There're a few things that I wanted to talk about last video that I didn't get to talk about. In one of them- t-t-two of, two of them actually- has to do with Neil Gaiman. First thing: I have in front of me a copy of his most recent publication, Fragile Things, which is a collection of excellent short stories. Katherine and I have been reading them to each other at night. And I wanted to share with you something from his introduction: "and on the subject of naming animals, can I just say how happy I was to learn that the word Yeti literally translated apparently means 'That thing, over there'
Quick, brave Himalayan guide, what's that thing over there?
Ah Yeti?
I see.
Second thing: apparently They Might Be Giants is doing the soundtrack to Coraline the movie. YES! Oh my God, that is so cool! Finding that out has made Neil Gaiman way way cooler in my book. So now you know how much I like They Might Be Giants.
Now, onto things that don't have to do with Neil Gaiman. Katherine is not researching marijuana. Weed research, like she's doing research on weeds. Katherine is researching plant communities and how to eliminate invasive species like Spotted Nap Weed. The job starts in a couple of weeks, and it's going to be really weird to not have her around all the time.
And finally, about the Bermudez Triangle, Maureen Johnson's now banned book. What the f--, It's not cool. But what is cool, is what happened to Brotherhood 2.0. I think that your video yesterday has had more comments than any other Brotherhood 2.0 video. So apparently people care more about book banning than they do about my obsession with Helen Hunt. Which is (chokes and coughs) definitely a good thing. Thank you all so much for standing up for the librarians, and for Maureen. Great work. Now, I think I may go out and buy the Bermudez Triangle because I want to see what all of the fuss is about. And, I think that's all, so John, I will see you tomorrow.
John wished he could search the transcripts of vlogbrothers, and I decided to make that dream happen! Nerdfighters!

Brotherhood 2.0: April 30: Hellos from Los Angeles
Good morning Hank, it's Monday, April 30th. A lot of people wanted to say hi to you this weekend, so I let em.
Tobin Anderson: Hey there Hank, umm, this time I'm not hanging from a fire escape being chased by police, so this is really an improvement.
Cecil Castellucci: Hi Hank, how are you?
John: Say Hi, Coe.
Coe Booth: Hi Coe
Sonya Sones: Good morning Hank
Dana Reinhardt: Good morning Hank
Julie Strauss-Gabel: Hi Hank!
T. Cooper: Good morning Hank (eats fruit)
Now that my editor and a bunch of other authors have said hello to you, I have a surprise.
Francesca: Good morning Hank, and good morning Kelly, this is Francesca, hi. Have a really good day.
Hank, that was Francesca Lia Block, the author of Weetzie Bat, a book I know you like, and I know I like, and I also know that Brotherhood2.0 viewer Kelly likes. Speaking of Francesca Lia Block, Judy Blume might have just been knocked out of my Guilt Free Three. And now for our final introduction:
Coe: Rootsy Hank, I think you're really cute, and I know you're married already, but-
Hank, as you mentioned in your video last week, it was totally massively illegal for me to try to record the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes on video, so I had to do it really surreptitiously, and as you can see I did a really wonderful job with the camera work (shot of ceiling) I don't like to brag, but if they give out a Los Angeles Times Book Prize for the best bootleg recording of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes, I am definitely going to win.
(more footage) So first Jackie Woodson, the presenter, introduced each of the five finalists: The Rules of Survival, Tyrell, The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, An Abundance of Katherines, and Just in Case. And then came the moment we'd all been waiting for, and by we I mean the thirty people in the audience who care about Young Adult literature.
(in footage)
announcer: Coe Booth.
John: Yaaaay!
Coe: It is my hope that it will fall into the hands of those kids who really do not see themselves represented in literature often.
(back in bed) And my hope also. Congratulations, Coe.
Moving on. Hank, I have a challenge for you. The Yeti and I have both been singing the Helen Hunt song pretty much non stop for the last five days. I wanna give you a brief sense of what it's like to be at our house right now:
(shot of home) aren't you nervous about trying to find a house?
The Yeti: God, so nervous.
John: (sigh, sings) Helen Hunt Helen Hunt
(in bed) Anyway Hank we sing the song constantly. We can't get it out of our heads. The only problem is that we can't quite sing it in key because it seems to have been written in the key of awesome. And so Hank, that brings me to my challenge. I would like to challenge you to make more songs! Lots more! But what I need right now is for you to write a song that will replace the Helen Hunt song because it's starting to burn a hole in my head.
(Brotherhood 2.0 logo) Oh hey, Hank, by the way, you know what's funnier than dogs in New York? (shot of dog in sundress) That's right. Dogs in Los Angeles. Look at it, Hank! It's a chihuahua that seems to be married to a 19th century plantation owner!

Brotherhood 2.0: April 26: Hollywood Meetings
(shot of torso clapping, kneels down) Hank, that's your standing ovation for the Helen Hunt song.
(at beach) Good morning, Hank, it's Thursday April 26th. The Pacific Ocean is behind me and Los Angeles is in front of me. (inside) Hank it's been a day of crazy Hollywood meetings. And so I thought I'd give you a quick run through of everything that's happened. First my agent and I were walking down the beach in Los Angeles when we came across this sculpture (shot of sculpture) and I was like, what is that a sculpture of? It sure looks like a sculpture of something dirty! And then I walked around it and uh- it's the Virgin Mary. Weird!
(show of yellow car parked obnoxiously) Mission for the Nerdfighters: find this guy (License plate says SHEERAZ) (in car) statistical chances I don't like that guy? 100%. (shot of red hummer, middle finger) Hank this is the most important meeting I have today, it's with people who might want to turn An Abundance of Katherines into a movie. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have eaten a whole barbeque chicken pizza about twelve minutes ago over the course of about 48 seconds. (burps)
Hank do you remember when you were in, like, eighth grade and it occurred to you for the first time that there were people who might actually like you and be willing to be your friend, and how exciting that was? It seems to me that everyone in Los Angeles is stuck in eighth grade. They're still so excited about the chance that somebody, somewhere might like them. Oh my God, I like you so much! I like you too, you're great! I love you, you look great in that!
(techno plays) Also Hank, everywhere you go there are speakers like this pointed outside playing music like that. (camera dances to beat)
OK, Hank, it's time for the meeting. Here we are outside the building. I'm gonna show you what it looks like, real quick. They're very very welcoming. Check it out Hank (shot of room filled with frames and birdhouses) It's like the opposite of Los Angeles. I mean you have to say, per square inch, it contains more items than any other place I've ever been inside of. I'm remind a little bit of my college girlfriend Marie Ponzillo, who's parents had the largest Santa Claus collection on the East Coast. You know what I keep thinking? Mom would be so happy here. (shot of room) I mean to Mom? This would be like, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. She would just be so happy.
Hank I have great news! I can see into the future (shot of fortune telling toy)
Toy: Ask me what's on your mind.
John: Here's my question for Madam See More, is it ever gonna happen between Hank and Helen Hunt?
Toy: My crystal ball says: Highly doubtful. Ask me what's on your mind.
John: Umm, would I do a good job writing the Abundance of Katherines screenplay?
Toy: Psychic energy suggests: it's not in the stars.
John: Dang.
Toy: I am thinking it over, absolutely, positively, definitely.
John: But, you just told me no.
Toy: The wisdom of the ages tells me: ask me again later
(back in room) So anyway Hank, the meeting ended up going really well, Madam See More be damned. See you tomorrow.

Helen Hunt
Good morning John, it's Wednesday April 25th. Judy Blume. That's weird. I admit it. You admit it. We admit it. We're weird! Helen Hunt and Judy Blume are weird people to have in your Guilt-Three Free. Guilt-Three Free? Weird people to have in your Guilt-Free Three. Especially since I only have one person in my Guilt-Free Three. Katherine has known about this for a long time. She doesn't like it. But there are haters out there! You can't help it! You can't help who's on your Guilt-Free Three! And so, for Helen Hunt, who deserves to be on Guilt-Free Threes all over the nation. I've written a song.
(singing): The first time I saw you was the day that I hit puberty,
Played a beautiful girl, shunned by society,
It wasn't your fault, you just smoked one laced dooby,
That after-school special made me want to never do PCP.
Helen Hunt, Helen Hunt,
You make my heart do acrobatic stunts,
You stand and face the brunt of the twister of my burning want,
Helen Hunt, you know I'm Mad About You.
I saw you naked in The Waterdance,
It was As Good As It Gets in my pants,
And for that I really want to thank you,
Your husband's name was Hank, right? Well, my name is Hank, too.
Helen Hunt, Helen Hunt,
You make my heart do acrobatic stunts,
You stand and face the brunt of the twister of my burning want,
Helen Hunt, you know I'm Mad About You.
Once an ex-best friend of mine said he couldn't see,
How an old and ugly actress could mean so much to me.
Well, a minute later looking down at him bleeding in the snow,
I asked him who was Best Comedy Actress four years in a row.
Helen Hunt, Helen Hunt,
You make my heart do acrobatic stunts,
You stand and face the brunt of the twister of my burning want,
Helen Hunt, you know I'm Mad About You.
Helen Hunt, you know I'm Mad About You.
(speaking) I just watched that video all the way through, and it's really, really creepy. Oh, my God. I'm the creepiest of them all! Yes! Why do I spend so much time on these things? Some days... I just get a little carried away, okay? Sorry. Take that, all you people who think that there's no reason to love Helen Hunt. She made me never want to do PCP. Helen, if you're watching this, I'm really not that scary.
And now that that's done with, I'll see you tomorrow.

Brotherhood 2.0: April 24: Moving
Good morning, Hank, it's Tuesday, April 26th. Today's video blog comes in five parts.
Part one: Papa, it's his birthday, you need to call him.
Part two: Speaking of old people, Helen Hunt is on your guilt-free three list? Helen Hunt? Helen Hunt? Hank, I'd just like to remind you that cougar hunting is not legal in the United States. But anyway Hank, you're talking about your celebrity do list, as another commenter called it,
reminded me of number: 3. My own celebrity do list, which I keep, of course, in my copy of How to Be a Lady In Your Pants. Now, let's see if we can find it in here. Ah! There it is. OK, Hank, we have Natalie Portman, perfectly acceptable, Jenna Fischer from The Office. Pam. The only thing I like the idea of more than Pam and Jim getting together? Pam and John getting together. And then of course, we have Judy Blume. I mean, she's cute. She's really cute and one time at a conference she kissed me on the cheek and I liked it and I like her and I'm not gonna talk about it anymore. OK, maybe you get a pass on Helen Hunt.
Part 4: Moving! Hank, I'm sorry to hear that your house is on the block. I have good news though, I think that you should buy a house. But not in Missoula. Specifically I think you should buy a house in Indianapolis, Indiana. You wanna know why? Because I'm moving there. Sarah got a job at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which is really one of the most exciting contemporary art spaces in America. And we're really psyched to go there, umm, but I'm a little worried because I don't have any friends in Indianapolis, and I think I'm gonna miss New York. Although if you think about it, Indianapolis is like the New York of Indiana. And also I'm told that its got really good urban exploring. Plus yesterday I was looking on the internet and houses in Indianapolis are almost free!
Part five: Hank, I liked your EcoGeek podcast animation introduction so much that I've been thinking that we could have a shorter, more visual animation for Brotherhood 2.0 that maybe doesn't spell communication wrong. Maybe you or one of the Nerdfighters can get on it. I'd do it myself except I'm bad at animating and plus I have to figure out how I'm gonna move to Indianapolis with all of these books. Hank, I'll see you tomorrow.

April 23rd: Celebrity
Robert Michael Pyle: Hi John, it's Monday April 23rd! (shot of him bowling a strike) And here we are at the Westview Fun Game Place. That's not it! What's it called? Westway Fun Center! Westside fun? (laughs and zooms in on sign behind him that reads Westside Lanes) The fun place in the West!
Hank: What does it feel like when you pick up a spare Bob?
Robert: Well when I pick up a spare it feels even better than writing a good paragraph, and I know, John, you know what that's like.
(at home) That was acclaimed naturalist and award winning nature writer, Robert Michael Pyle. RMP, or Bob, or RobBob as we call him was a visiting professor at my university a couple years ago and I took a class from him. He's an all around super duper guy and is tons of fun to bowl with. He had a lot to do with me becoming a writer, uh, just like you did, so it's nice to kind of introduce you to each other.
John I should let you know that I am extremely proud of your mathematics. That was some excellent calculating you did. You hit it right on the head there, nine hundred and forty something pounds of carbon. Not something I'm necessarily proud of, but our videos have been watched over a hundred thousand times! A hundred thousand times! That's a lot of video watching, something like six thousand hours of people watching our videos!
Hold on, I'm getting my calculator. If we had to actually pay people for the time that they gave us, and we had to pay them minimum wage, it would have cost us over 30,000 dollars. Brotherhood2.0 even without a living wage has cost the world 30,000 dollars of time.
(shows image of giraffe sex) If anyone had ever wondered how, exactly, this works, this is how this works.
(back to Hank) Thank you for that 30,000 dollars of time, we're going to use it to decrease world suck, somehow. Frankly, it's good to know that more hours go onto watching this video than into making it. Someone has asked, in the comments, how long it takes to make one of these videos, and that's kind of hard to say. Because I don't just make the video. I write a story at EcoGeek, and I come back and I record some video, and then I go get some breakfast, and I come back and record some more video. But on the days when I really concentrate, it takes a minimum of two hours. It's good to be appreciated. It's good to be appreciated to the tune of 126 votes at the Bloggers' Choice Awards! Holy Frickin Moly! We are catching up to Youtube!
Now I know that we're not the biggest video blog project out there, but there are a lot of people watching me talk to you, and that's weird. So I want to thank them, and I want to say if you're at Brotherhood 2.0, (points to bottom of screen) right there. Also, there's been a little bit of talk about me being on someone's free pass list. A free pass list is a list of celebrities that you get to do if you ever get the chance to do. First of all, apparently I'm a celebrity, second of all, apparently I'm on someone's free pass list. And people are asking if I'd like to comment on that. I would not- like to comment on that. I'm fine with it. I'm a little bit disappointed that I came in after Brian Setzer. I would like to say to The Yeti, and to Katherine, who I know are watching. John and I don't have free pass lists, except maybe Helen Hunt.
Ehhh, now that I've let that little bit slip, I guess I'll see ya tomorrow.
